Saltwater Pool Salt Calculator
Find exactly how much salt to add to hit your salt chlorine generator's target. Enter your volume and salinity readings — get pounds and 40-lb bags.
Your Pool & Salinity
For guidance only. Add salt in stages with the pump running, then wait ~24 hours before re-testing. It's easier to add more than to dilute — don't overshoot your target.
How the Salt Calculation Works
Salt is measured in parts per million (ppm). To raise salinity by a known amount, you add salt in proportion to your pool's water weight:
Pounds of salt = (Target − Current) × Gallons × 8.34 ÷ 1,000,000
The 8.34 is the weight of one gallon of water in pounds. For a 15,000-gallon pool starting at 0 ppm and targeting 3,200 ppm: (3,200 − 0) × 15,000 × 8.34 ÷ 1,000,000 ≈ 400 pounds, or about ten 40-lb bags.
A few field notes
- Add in stages. Pour salt across the pool with the pump running and brush it toward the drain to dissolve.
- Wait before testing. Give it ~24 hours of circulation before reading salinity — undissolved salt won't register.
- You can't remove salt. If you're over target, the only fix is to drain partially and refill with fresh water.
Get your volume from the pool volume calculator, check overall balance with the LSI calculator, and remember that salt cells nudge pH up over time — keep the dosing calculator handy.
