Add chemicals in order — pH, then alkalinity, then calcium — circulating and retesting between each.
Recommended Doses
Your water is already at target — no additions needed.
Cost estimates use typical chemical prices and assume standard concentrations (31.45% muriatic acid, 77% calcium chloride). For guidance only — never mix chemicals, wear appropriate PPE, and always retest after a full turnover before adding more.
The Dosing Rates Behind the Numbers
This calculator scales four standard professional dosing rates by your pool volume (in 10,000-gallon increments) and the size of each correction:
- Lower pH — muriatic acid (31.45%): 26 fl oz per 0.2 pH drop per 10,000 gal
- Raise pH — soda ash: 6 oz per 0.2 pH rise per 10,000 gal
- Raise alkalinity — sodium bicarbonate (baking soda): 24 oz per 10 ppm per 10,000 gal
- Raise calcium hardness — calcium chloride (77%): 20 oz per 10 ppm per 10,000 gal
For example, a 20,000-gallon pool dropping pH from 7.8 to 7.4 (a 0.4 reduction, two 0.2 increments) needs 26 × 2 × 2.0 = 104 fl oz of muriatic acid, about 0.8 gallons.
Why order matters
Always correct pH first, then alkalinity, then calcium — alkalinity and calcium adjustments both nudge pH, so setting pH first means fewer re-corrections. Lowering alkalinity or calcium isn't a simple dose: alkalinity comes down via acid plus aeration, and calcium only via partial draining.
